A Busy Year for the GCSE Citizenship Studies pupils.

Monday 12 October 2009

The GCSE Citizenship Studies pupils have had a busy year, studying various topics both in and out of school. A key part of the course is ‘active participation’ which the boys achieved through their delivery of the BHF Heartstart training to year 6 pupils at Rodmell Primary School in November. They are now busy writing up this project for their coursework.

The citizenship course covers many aspects of our rights as citizens and just before Christmas we welcomed a Trading Standards Officer to come and explain some consumer rights. This was a very enjoyable session greatly enhanced by the need to weigh and eat chocolate and test crisps and biscuits! Miss Baxter left us an invitation to enter the Special Schools’ Consumer Challenge Quiz in April.

In March we visited Lewes police station to raise awareness of parts of the legal system. The pupils certainly tested the system of arrest by trying out the cells themselves and managing to leave Mrs Midgley behind in the cell for a few minutes – peace at last!  However, Mrs Midgley had the last laugh as pupils voluntarily put themselves behind bars for a photo call.

We took up the Trading Standards offer and in April the boys found themselves at Brighton Race Course for the regional heats of the Consumer Challenge Quiz, having been well coached by Miss Baxter, who visited again. Our congratulations go to John Oxley, Robin Hanford, Jonathon Heron and Jacob Barry, who were the winning team for East Sussex.

Our most recent venture was to take part in the Citibank sponsored event, ‘Money makes the world go round’ held at the Docklands Museum. The pupils focused on a gallery about the rise and fall of the London Docks, followed by a drama presentation about the 1987 financial crash - a good link for the recent Credit Crunch. One of the main highlights was the tour of the Citibank towers, visiting the Global Equities Trading Floor and travelling by lift to the 36th floor of the tallest tower! We were able to take photographs of key London landmarks such as the O2 arena and City Airport. The event ended with a challenge similar in nature to those set on ‘The Apprentice’.

The students did exceptionally well in the finals of the Consumer Challenge Quiz, coming second overall.  I would like to thank Mrs Midgley for organising the events and entering our students for the Challenge Quiz and thank the students for their contributions and congratulate them on their success.

Brighton and Hove Albion Special Schools Football Tournament

Thursday 30 July 2009

On Monday 19th October, Mr Thornhill and Mr Goldberg took 13 pupils from years 6,7 and 8 to the Triangle in Burgess Hill for The Brighton and Hove Albion special Schools Football tournament. We split the pupils into an A and B team:

A Team: Olly Foord - GK , Nicky Stannard, Will Daffin, Josh Shellabear, Jolyon Marshall, Ben Cottrell

B Team: Kieran McCarthy - GK, Chloe Dutton, Emma De Witte, Grace Plummer, Charlie Kirwan, Thomas Lindsay, Jack Smethem

Both teams had to play approximately 5 group games before seeing if they had done well enough to make the semi-final. Unfortunately the B Team didn’t quite make the semi-final but all took part and had fun. The A Team managed it through to the semi-final against Lindfield and won their game 2-1, with a fantastic fight back coming from 1-0 behind. They then played in the final against Cedar Centre and with the first goal from Will Daffin the Triangle erupted with applause from Northease. Ben Cottrell then showed great composure to seal the victory late on with a cool finish to make it 2-0 and ensure Northease would be the champions!
Well done everyone

Mr Goldberg

Report from Ben Cottrell 8a

Team A: We scored some brilliant goals by Will Daffin, Josh Shellabear, Jolyon Marshall, and Ben Cottrell. Our brilliant goalkeeper - Olly Foord saved some really good shots, with good work in defence from Nicky Stannard. we had a really good day playing alongside some good players from other schools, and managed to win the Tournament with Mr Goldberg coaching us.

Team B: They played very well throughout the Football tournament and although they didn’t win, it’s not always about winning, it’s about having fun. They played some really good football.

Kieran McCarthy and myself won player of the day and we both got a trophy.
